To play Emperor of the Battlefield you will need the rules. No great surprise!

The rulebook is wire bound for ease of use without breaking the spine. 84 A4 pages in colour on 170gsm paper. The covers are 300gsm Agfa Synaps. 

Add a playing surface, some terrain, representations of units of cavalry, infantry and artillery plus some commanders.

A tape measure is useful, but Measuring Sticks are easier to use. It is simple to produce a couple for your games and far less effort than trying to read (or write) conversion tables. There is no necessity to rebase your figures. I like to keep my life fairly simple.

Three dice. You need one blue d10 for your Command Tests. One white d8 and one red d6 for the Morale Tests. You and your opponent can share them. I’m fussy about the colours, because it really helps in multi-player games, especially when novices are involved.

You will need some some markers. Casualty figures are often used, but we seem to have amassed a lot of pompoms. Our black ones are Waver markers and the red ones are used to mark units that Flinch from Preparatory Fire. For convenience, we use lengths of green pipecleaner to mark charging units at the Decision Point. YMMV. It all becomes very clear and intuitive during a game.

An Emperor’s Widget is not essential, but it is a very useful item. It does so much.
